Using a digital or paper form to register a short stay in the Police Region of Utrecht

A short explanation

If you come to the Netherlands as a foreign national for a maximum of 90 days, you must register with the Utrecht Region Aliens Police. Register online with the Utrecht Region Aliens Police if you are staying in one of the municipalities listed below.

Requirement to report
This requirement only applies to those who are not citizens of a country in the European Union. Statutory provisions state that you must register with the Aliens Police within three working days of your arrival in the Netherlands. Failure to register in good time is a punishable offence.

Exceptions
If you are staying at an official camping ground or in a hotel, you are not required to register, unless it is expressly stated otherwise on your visa. Once you register, you may stay a maximum of 90 days in the Netherlands, depending on the period of time indicated on your visa. The final day indicated on your visa is the final day you may stay in the Netherlands, unless you have already spent 90 days in the Netherlands. In this case, the 90 day period of time applies. This period of time will be shorter in other cases meaning you may never stay longer in the Netherlands than 90 days. If you wish to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residency permit, or in special cases, an extension on your visa. Please contact the IND on telephone number 0900-1234 561 for both situations.

Registering: online or by filling in a form
When staying in the Police Region of Utrecht, you can register in two ways:

  1. Digital registration (within 3 days of arrival!)
This is the simplest way to register; fill out the registration form at www.politie.nl/utrecht. If you have a visa, then use the registration form for short stay (KV) with visa hyperlink. If you are travelling without a visa as you do not need one to enter the Netherlands, then use the registration form for short stay (KV) without visa hyperlink. Please fill out every question in full, as we will not process incomplete forms. The information you need to fill out the questions can be found in your travel document, that is to say your passport or identity card. When applying for a visa we will only accept details from a passport.
The day you send the form is your date of registration. Because you register your details yourself and these details are processed immediately after receipt into the national police’s aliens records, we are able to process your digital registration more quickly.

  2. Written registration using a form (within 3 days of arrival!)
Not everyone has access to the Internet and the opportunity to register online. If you cannot register online, go to the town hall in the city or municipality where you want to stay or go to your nearest district police station. If you register your short stay in the Netherlands with these authorities, then the counter clerk will provide you with a set of instructions and a form with which you can provide all the details we require. The instructions are available in Dutch, French, English, Spanish and Turkish. You must make sure that you fill this form out carefully. The form states the address where you should send it for processing into the aliens record.

Once your details have been checked and approved, your short stay details are entered into the Dutch police's aliens record. As of that time you have the right to stay for a maximum of 90 days. The total amount of time depends on the validity period for your visa. The aliens record will send you a letter to confirm your registration. The letter will contain your name and your aliens number and will arrive three to four days after registration. The letter will also contain the date of your registration, which is used to determine the duration of your stay. A check may be performed during your stay in the Netherlands to verify whether or not you have registered. You must therefore keep this letter with your passport, so you can prove during a check by a government agency that you are in the Netherlands for a short stay.

If you received a visa sticker (see below) in your passport during your last visit to the Netherlands, you can transfer a number of details from this sticker to your online or written registration. The following picture shows which details these are, and where you can find them.
