I’ve lost my official government document (passport, driver’s license, ID-card, residence permit). What should I do?

If you’ve lost your passport or another official government document that can be used as ID, your first step should be to check if it was handed in at the municipality’s Lost and Found office.

In the event of the loss (or theft) of a document of this kind issued in a foreign country, the police are required (by international legislation) to draw up an official report. For the report, the following information is required:

  • Document number
  • Date of issue
  • Expiry date

If the information pertains to a passport or ID-card, you can obtain this information via the Embassy of the country that issued the document. Once you have received the information, you can contact the police to make an appointment at a police station near you. Bring the information with you to your appointment.
The police will issue an official report of a lost or stolen ID. You can then take a copy of this report to the Embassy or Consulate of the country that issued the identification document and request a new document or emergency document.
