What are the police’s responsibilities during the NATO Summit?
The police will ensure that the NATO Summit runs safely and smoothly, for those who attend the summit as well as for citizens and police personnel. The closer you get to the World Forum – the venue where the summit takes place – or to any delegations on the move, the higher the level of security will be in terms of personnel, resources and technical measures. In this context, the police will work closely together with the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
What kind of work will the police be doing during the NATO Summit?
Police employees will be deployed at various locations and in a variety of roles, for instance as community police officers, officers of the security and protection unit and motorcycle officers. Basic police services will remain available, and police stations stay open. Insofar as possible, incident handling, operational police management and high-priority investigations will continue as usual.
How many police employees will be deployed during the NATO Summit?
During the NATO Summit, the police will deploy 27,000 employees. That is almost half of the total police workforce. All of these police employees and materials may be visible during the summit. They will all contribute to ensuring that the summit proceeds as safely as possible and without disruption. In addition, there are numerous police employees who will replace those directly involved or facilitate them by providing support (transport, accommodation, catering, etc.). Their contribution to ensuring a safe summit will not always be visible but is just as important.
What expertise is required for the NATO Summit?
During the NATO Summit, employees from different fields of expertise will be deployed. For security reasons, we cannot discuss any specifics, but they include motorcycle officers who followed specialist training as well as personnel from the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department (DKDB), the riot police (ME) and the security and protection unit.
Will any police employees from my area be deployed during the NATO Summit?
In total, 27,000 police employees will be deployed. They will come to The Hague from all over the Netherlands.
Have the police taken into consideration scenarios such as a cyberattack, power outage, terrorist attack etc.?
The police are considering all conceivable scenarios. These scenarios have been trained and exercised. Of course, we may be confronted with a scenario or variant of a scenario that was not the subject of any specific training. However, the police and their partners are experienced, agile and flexible organisations, capable of anticipating swiftly. The police will also be able to find an appropriate solution if an unexpected situation occurs.
What kind of security measures will the police take?
In addition to certain visible security measures, many invisible security measures will be taken. For obvious reasons, the police cannot provide any specifics.
